History of PISM

The establishment of the Islamic Centre in 2004 began with the Counseling and Spirituality Unit and was responsible under the Student Development and Welfare Centre. The function carried out is to plan and implement the spiritual and personality development program of students in addition to the management of the Student Financial Aid Fund. Next, the Spiritual Unit was given the responsibility to further expand welfare assistance with the transformation of expanding the scope of student welfare assistance in addition to the management of the Student Zakat Fund. In line with the increase in staff and the expansion of functions, in 2011 the Spiritual Unit was upgraded to an Islamic Centre and two main units were opened, namely the Spiritual Unit and the Welfare Unit.

As a result of the transformation of the UMT administration in 2013, the Islamic Center is responsible under the Registrar’s Office and the existing functions of the Islamic Centre were expanded from two sections to four sections, namely the Mosque Promotion and Administration Section, the Syiar Development Section, the Student Financial Wellbeing Section and the Zakat and Waqf Section.

The Islamic Centre building officially began operating on 22 April 2015 and was given Friday Prayer permission on 26 June 2015. The Celebration Ceremony was completed by HRH the Sultan of Terengganu on 02 October 2015 and this building was named the Sultan Mahmud Islamic Centre. Starting November 1, 2015, the Sultan Mahmud Islamic Centre is under the administration of the Vice Chancellor’s Office and the function is expanded to research based on Science and Islam.
